This is undoubtedly the image of the Oscars. This Sunday, March 27, at the 94th ceremony, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage. A few minutes earlier, the comedian had dared to joke about the shaved head of Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from an illness. “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” the Academy Award-winning comedian told him. This scene, no one could have expected it even if relations have been stormy for years between the two men. In the room, the stars of the 7th American art attended dumbfounded at this slap. And on social media, their reactions quickly went viral. Starting with that of Nicole Kidman, who, from her seat waved her arms, mouth and eyes wide open.
But in reality, this snapshot of Nicole Kidman… was not immortalized during this precise scene. As Vulture tells it, the actress was photographed at the start of the Oscars ceremony, when eight statuettes were presented. “Yes, it’s an image of Nicole Kidman taken during the pre-show not aired on television,” explained the author of this photo, Myung Chun of the Los Angeles Times. If Nicole Kidman reacted like that, it’s because she was delighted that Jessica Chastain won the award for best actress for her role in In the eyes of Tammy Faye. “It appears that she was just very happy to see Jessica Chastain come into the room. She then raised her hands to greet her,” the photographer told Vulture. Nothing to do with the slap given by Will Smith to Chris Rock.

Will Smith lose his Oscar?
Since this outburst of violence, the actor has apologized several times. I want to apologize to the Academy. “I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. It’s a wonderful moment, and I’m not crying for winning a prize, he wrote in particular on his Instagram account. (…) The jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about my Jada’s condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.” The day after this ceremony, the Academy of Oscars announced to open an investigation, and intends to rely on “regulations and Californian law”. Will Smith risk losing his Oscar? This hypothesis is unlikely, since Chris Rock has already revealed that he does not intend to file a complaint against the actor, crowned for his role in The Williams Method.
