Vladimir Putin has been in the spotlight since he declared war on Ukraine on February 21, 2022. However, his military action is not the only thing of interest. His state of health is also regularly in the news. According to many sources, he is suffering from cancer. That’s why Dr Sarah Whitmore, an expert on domestic Russian politics at Oxford Brookes University, told the Mirror what could happen if Vladimir Putin died overnight. According to her, Mikhail Mishustin, the prime minister, would automatically take power upon his death. On the other hand, elections should be organized within three months to elect a new president. She is not in a position to be able to assure who could take over from the current president of Russia.
“Putin has not publicly named a successor, but it would be someone who would continue to pursue the survival of the regime”, can we read in the columns of the tabloid. One person stands out, however, it is the current Minister of Defense, Sergei Choïgou. “It is very likely that the regime around Putin would choose a trustworthy and suitable successor to their interests. Someone we know as Shoigu, he was presented as a potential successor and seen as a popular and acceptable face,” said Dr. Sarah Whitmore.
