A horrible act. In Guatemala, three teenage girls, aged 14 to 17, and members of the Barrio 18 gang, were arrested in the country’s capital. Police announced on Saturday June 4 that they were arrested while beheading a 15-year-old girl. The police spokesman said the minors were “discovered while beheading a 15-year-old girl” Friday night in a building in northern Guatemala City.
“Police officers patrolling the area heard screams and immediately went in search of the building from which the cries for help came,” the spokesperson said, adding: “They entered in the building at the time the crime was committed: one of them was holding the victim and the other was filming with his cell phone”. Jorge Aguilar however indicated that, despite the intervention of the police, the victim died on the spot.
3,500 violent deaths per year in Guatemala
At this stage, no motive has been advanced to justify the gesture of the teenagers. But the Barrio 18 gang, like its rival Mara Salvatrucha, specializes in racketeering businesses and bus companies, not hesitating to assassinate employees who refuse to pay the amount demanded. Each year in Guatemala, gangs and drug-related activities are responsible for approximately 50% of the 3,500 violent deaths.
