It took 15 years for a man to be arrested. Tuesday, December 13, the police arrested the one who is nicknamed the “predator of the woods”. The 62-year-old individual was taken into police custody as part of an investigation into five rapes committed between 1998 and 2008 in Charente-Maritime but also in the Paris region. It was in April 2019 that the national police launched a call for witnesses to find a man who used the same modus operandi, according to Philippe Guichard of the Central Office for the Suppression of Violence against Persons (OCRVP), in charge of investigations.

Indeed, the man always used the same chilling technique. “The Predator of the Woods” abducted his victims, aged 15 to 19, in town, then drove them into a wood before raping and releasing them. “He acted openly and his DNA was found each time,” he recalled. In the call for witnesses launched, the man was described as 60 years old, of European type, measuring “between 1m80 and 1m90”, with “very light blue eyes”, a “steel look”, an “emaciated face” with “forehead wrinkles” and “graying hair”.

DNA found

Thanks to the call for witnesses and the robot portrait of the suspect produced by software making it more realistic, the research has made it possible to trace this man who allegedly committed these rapes fifteen years ago. “The joining of the proceedings was justified in particular by similarities in the modus operandi (kidnapping in an urbanized area, transport in an isolated wooded area under the threat of a weapon) and the discovery of a common DNA, extracted from spermatozoa detected on the five victims,” Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement this week. A kind of relief for the victims who will be able to attend the trial.
