Ricky and Alexis Gould Stafford were both battling cancer when they fell in love. An idyll as touching as it is unexpected.
Their love story is worthy of a Nicholas Sparks movie! Alexis Gould Stafford was undergoing chemotherapy when she met her future husband Ricky Stafford, in remission and present for a check-up. The two lovebirds met in 2016 at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. At the time, the 15-year-old heard music coming from the 17-year-old handsome brunette’s bedroom. “He came out and started dancing and introducing himself. We quickly became friends,” she told Kennedy News.
In 2015, Alexis was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer that starts in nerve cells. She spent 17 months in the hospital where she underwent 6 sessions of chemotherapy, 4 surgeries as well as 2 stem cell transplants. A year earlier, Ricky discovered he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the blood. The young man chained 5 months of intravenous chemotherapy then 2 years in oral form. The two teenagers were therefore happy to be able to go through these ordeals together. A year after they met, Ricky’s cancer unfortunately returned. The young woman flew to Boston to support him. It was then that they realized the true nature of their feelings.
Freed from cancer, they savor their life together
After two months of relationship, Ricky proposed to Alexis. He went down on one knee on February 24, 2018, the day he was diagnosed with leukemia. They married on September 15, the date the young woman discovered her cancer: “We chose these difficult dates to transform them and give us a reason to smile.” In January 2020, the young man learned that he was in remission thanks to intensive treatment. Seven months later, Alexis’ health deteriorated to such an extent that she entered a palliative care center in January 2021. Fortunately, the pretty brunette thwarted the predictions: “I am cured of cancer and Ricky is technically in remission but he will also be cured in a few years. Now we are enjoying life 100%.”
