Sexually assaulted at the age of 12 by her brother’s best friend, 18-year-old Lorraine Smith, bravely comes out of the silence. In the columns of The Sun, she tells her story.

“Bradley was like family. He practically lived with us. I considered him a brother, but he betrayed me in the worst possible way.” This is how Lorraine Smith, 18, begins her story. In the columns of The Sun, this young British mother tells how, during her childhood, her brother’s best friend regularly abused her by making her promise to keep it a secret. Then aged 17, Bradley Jones was a close friend of the family. “He often helped me with my homework and we liked to play together with the rest of the family,” recalls Lorraine, from Northamptonshire. “I loved him there and he always looked after me at school. ”

But one day, when Lorraine was 12, everything changed. While the girl’s parents were in the kitchen, the teenager asked her to sit on the sofa. He then put his hands in his pants. “Shocked, I asked him what he was doing, but he didn’t say a word and continued to touch me. I felt hurt and confused, and vowed to avoid Bradley.” Hearing Lorraine’s brother calling them for dinner, Bradley paused and motioned for Lorraine to say nothing. In shock, the girl complied. She couldn’t imagine what was to come next, however. The following week, the teenager lashed out at her again: “Bradley appeared, took me by the arm and pulled me towards him. He touched me over my jeans. C ‘was horrible. I begged him to stop but he started to smile. Then he told me that no one would believe me and that was’ our little secret’. about him, so I thought he was right and people would think I had made it all up. ”

“He was like a brother to me”

For two years, Lorraine endured repeated assaults from Bradley without ever confiding in anyone. It was not until the summer of 2017, after the relocation of her attacker, that the then teenage girl broke the silence. In June 2021, Bradley pleaded guilty to rape of a child under 13. Northampton Crown Court sentenced him to 25 months’ imprisonment and entered the Sexual Predator Register for 10 years. “It’s not enough. He was like a brother to me, someone who protected me, and he stole my childhood,” Lorraine said sadly. But although marked for life by this terrible ordeal, the young woman feels ready to move forward and is now building her life with a trusted partner. “Now that he’s behind bars, I’m trying to fix my life. I have a partner and I’m a mom, and I’ve got a second coming up. I won’t let Bradley ruin my future.”
