Images that no one wants to see. The presenter of the program “Télé from here on vacation” broadcast at prime time on the Ivorian channel NCI, Yves de M’Bella, asked his anonymous guest (presented as a convicted rapist), to mime on a model the way he had assaulted several women.
This scene, which made the host laugh a lot despite the fact that he also asked his guest to give some advice to the women to prevent this from happening to them, caused an uproar of negative reactions, forcing the channel to suspend its employee, for a period of at least one month.
“A humiliating act for all women victims of rape”
Quickly, a petition to demand the deletion of the show and a sanction for the entire team on the plateau collected more than 50,000 signatures. The initiator of the petition declared that at a time “when we are fighting against violence against women, it is reductive that television, whose role is to educate, is complicit in this violence” , adding that this act is “insulting and humiliating for all women victims of rape”.
Then the Ivorian League for Women’s Rights took over the case, issuing a statement recalling that rape is a crime. A complaint for public contempt was filed and the Minister responsible for women in Côte d’Ivoire, Nassénéba Touré, also condemned the actions and comments of the two protagonists on the set.
