A tragic accident. In July 2022, a 23-year-old British girl fell to her death as she tried to reach her home in Bude, Cornwall, in the dark. That evening, while she was spending the evening with friends in a bar, Megan Thornton met Charlie Pengilly, a young man passing through staying in an old cottage overlooking Widemouth Bay. The latter offered to end the evening at the cottage, following which the two new friends decided to take a taxi, direction Widemouth bay.

On the spot, however, it turned out that no room was free for Megan. Around 2 a.m., the young woman decided to walk home, although Charlie advised her to take a taxi, but the evening turned tragic. Barely out of the back door of the cottage, located on the edge of an eroded cliff, Megan fell almost 10 meters. Charlie, who was on the phone calling a cab for her, rushed to get help. A client of the cottage, a nurse by profession, rushed to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation gestures on Megan, in vain. “She was a lovely girl. I was just trying to call a cab for her,” young Charlie said.

The protective barrier had been destroyed by the erosion of the cliff

According to the latter, it was dark when Megan left the cottage. The sunlight was disabled, and the protective barrier that had been installed had been destroyed by the erosion of the cliff. An autopsy revealed Meghan had a blood alcohol level 1.5 times the legal limit for driving. She died of head and neck injuries related to her fall.

Freshly graduated from the University of Exeter with honors, the young woman worked as a marketing assistant for the Coreus Group. “She was so precious to us. We are very proud of her, said her father, Paul Thornton, in the columns of the Mirror. She has accomplished so much in her short life. She was resolute, very determined, very hardworking and very ambitious.”
