Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg), Russia. From a modest background, he was the third child and only survivor after his two older brothers, Viktor and Oleg, died at a young age in the 1930s. After the Second World War, his parents found work at the Leningrad railway factory. Vladimir Putin was very sporty and practised judo and sambo, a Russian combat sport which enabled him to take part in many competitions.
In 1970, he enrolled at the University of Leningrad, from which he graduated in law in 1975. That same year, he began his career as a KGB officer. In 1985, he was posted to the Dresden counter-intelligence service in East Germany, where he spent five years as Officer Platov, and obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Back in Russia, he became an advisor to the rector of Leningrad University, Anatoli Sobchak, who was his teacher during his university years. In 1991, when Anatoli Sobchak was elected mayor of Leningrad, Vladimir Putin followed him, still in the position of advisor. In 1994, he was promoted to the position of first deputy mayor of the city of Leningrad, now St. Petersburg.
Increasingly influential, he was noticed by Boris Yeltsin, whom he joined in 1996 at the Russian presidency in Moscow. He was appointed head of the FSB, the Federal Security Service which replaced the KGB, before being named Prime Minister of the Russian Federation in August 1999. A few months later, following the resignation of Boris Yeltsin in December 1999, he took over as interim President.
On 26 March 2000, Vladimir Putin was elected as the second President of the Russian Federation in the first round of voting and re-elected in March 2004. His two mandates allowed the country to recover economically, Vladimir Putin wishes to return Russia to its former grandeur. To combat the tax exile of financial oligarchs, he imprisons some of them, including the former chairman of the Yukos oil group, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is imprisoned in Siberia for ten years.
During the 2008 presidential campaign, Vladimir Putin nominated Dmitri Medvedev as his legitimate successor to the presidency of Russia, under the banner of the United Russia party, on condition that he be appointed Prime Minister in case of victory. On 2 March 2008, Dmitri Medvedev won the first round of the election and handed over the presidency of the Russian government to Vladimir Putin.
On 4 March 2012, Vladimir Putin was again elected President of the Russian Federation and re-elected in March 2018.
In 2020, several Russian media circulated rumours about Vladimir Putin’s state of health, including Parkinson’s disease, which were denied by the Kremlin.
In 1993, he married Lyudmila Chkrebneva, a former Aeroflot flight attendant. The couple gave birth to two daughters; Maria (born in 1985) and Ekaterina (born in 1986). In June 2013, in a television interview, the couple announced that they had divorced after thirty years of marriage.
