Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956 in Concord, California. He was 5 years old when his parents, Amos Mefford Hanks and Janet Marylin Frager, divorced. He has two brothers, Larry and Jim and a sister Sandra. The siblings had an unstable childhood and the family broke up and rebuilt itself as their father, a chef, remarried and moved away. At school, the little boy, very shy, takes refuge in his favorite disciplines, sports and theater. His teachers, who detect in him a real talent for acting, encourage him to follow this path. The theater is a real escape, he registers for acting classes.

On the benches of the University of Sacramento in California, he met Vincent Dowling, director. The latter offers him to join the troupe of the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Cleveland. At the same time, he is forced to do odd jobs (hotel porter, popcorn salesman) to pay his bills.

At the beginning of the 80s, after this first theatrical experience, it is a sitcom, Bosom Buddies, in which he gets a role, which brings him a beginning of recognition. He then makes an appearance in the Happy Days series, and meets Ron Howard on the set. Fortunately, the director then beginner prepares a comedy, Splash, and auditions Tom Hanks to whom he gives the lead role. The mermaid played by Daryl Hannah brings him luck, the film is a real success and the career of the young actor is launched. He then continues in this register and shoots several comedies (Le Palace en folie, Une baraque à casser, Big…).

The actor, who aspires to more dramatic roles, begins a turning point in his career in the 90s. Despite the failure of Brian De Palma’s film The Burning of the Vanities, the actor perseveres in this direction. The consecration comes with his interpretation of a homosexual lawyer suffering from AIDS in front of Antonio Banderas in Philadelphia (1993), which earned him the Oscar for best actor. The following year he achieved the feat of winning a second Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Forrest Gump. The actor has made a string of successful films; Apollo 13 (1995), It’s time to save Private Ryan (1998) and The Green Line (1999).

In 2000, in preparation for the role of a shipwrecked man on a desert island in Alone in the World, he loses about 20 kilos. His spectacular physical metamorphosis earned him the Golden Globes for best actor. The actor cultivates professional friendships and regularly meets his favorite directors; Steven Spielberg (Il faut sauver le soldat Ryan, Arrête-moi si tu peux, Le terminal), Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Seul au monde, Le Pôle express). In 2006, Ron Howard, the director of his debut, joined him to shoot The Da Vinci Code. In 2009, the duo shot the second adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel, Angels and Demons. In 2013, it plays Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips. He lends his features to Walt Disney, whom he plays in John Lee Hancock’s In the Shadow of Mary in 2014.

Tom Hanks dons a new cap and starts directing. In 1996, he shoots a comedy about a rock band of the 60s, That thing you do! Then he experimented with a new format with mini-series; From Earth to the Moon (1998) on the American conquest of space – Tom Hanks is a member of the National Space Society -, and Brothers in Arms (2001) on the Second World War, co-produced by Steven Spielberg. He will be making a second feature film in 2011, Il n’est jamais trop tard, starring Julia Roberts. Unfortunately the film received a very mixed critical reception.

On January 5, 2020, at the Golden Globes ceremony, he received the Cecil B. DeMille honorary award for his entire career.

On March 12, 2020, while he is in Australia to prepare a shooting, the actor reveals that he and his wife have tested positive for coronavirus.

On the private side, Tom Hanks married Samantha Lewes in January 1978. The couple has two children; Colin (born in 1977) and Elizabeth (born in 1982) but divorced in 1987. He then met the actress Rita Wilson with whom he has been married since April 30, 1988. Together they have two children; Chet (born in 1990) and Truman Theodore (born in 1995).
