Born in 1930 in Indianapolis, USA, Steve McQueen was abandoned by his widowed mother and raised by an uncle. His mother eventually got him back and he moved with her to Los Angeles. After a difficult adolescence, he worked in a number of jobs before taking classes at the Actors Studio in New York. He began on the Broadway stage in the mid-1950s in the play A Hatful of Rain. In 1958, he played the bounty hunter Josh Randall on the small screen in the series In the Name of the Law. This role brought him rapid fame, as well as the Winchester rifle of his character.

His film career began in the late 1950s with Global Danger. In 1959, he is revealed by The Prey of Vultures, by John Sturges.
