Sean Penn was born on August 17, 1960 in Santa Monica, California. Son of film and television director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan, Sean has two brothers, Chris and Michael. As a teenager, he began directing and acting in his first films in high school. At the age of 14, he landed an appearance in the television series The Little House on the Prairie. Passionate about theatre, he trained at the Group Repertory Theatre in Los Angeles.

In 1981, he made his debut on the big screen and played the role of another young debutant, Tom Cruise, in Harold Becker’s Taps. In 1988, his father cast him in A Trial in Berlin. When his talent was noticed, he went on to shoot a series of films (Colors, Outrages, The Last March). In 1997, he received the acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in the romantic comedy She’s so lovely. Over the years, the actor has diversified his acting palette and has performed in various registers, from thriller (The Game), war film (The Red Line) and biopic (Before the Night). The year 2003 marked a turning point in his career with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s 21 Grams and Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River, which earned him the Oscar for Best Actor. Scripts were flooding in, and in 2005 he played Nicole Kidman in The Performer, followed by Jude Law the following year in The King’s fools. He again won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as a gay politician in Harvey Milk (2008). In 2015, he stars in Pierre Morel’s film The Gunman alongside Javier Bardem and Idris Elba. At the César ceremony in February 2015, the actor received a César of Honour for his entire career.

In the early 1990s, Sean Penn followed in his father’s footsteps and directed his first film, The Indian Runner (1991). He repeated the experience and made Crossing Guard (1995) and The Pledge (2001) in which he directed his favourite actor, Jack Nicholson. In 2007, he set up his camera in Alaska to adapt Jon Krakauer’s best-selling film Into the Wild for the big screen.

A committed actor, Sean Penn revealed another facet of his personality during the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010. He then left Hollywood, decided to create his own JP/Haitian Relief Organization and settled for several months in the Pétionville camp alongside the refugees.

On the heart side, Sean Penn was married to singer Madonna (1985-1989). In 1990, he met actress Robin Wright on the set of the film Les anges de la nuit. Together they have two children; Dylan (born on April 13, 1991) and Hopper (born on August 6, 1993) and were married on April 27, 1996. But after 11 years of marriage the actress filed for divorce in December 2007. Despite several attempts at reconciliation their divorce was pronounced in August 2010. The same year, the couple went through another ordeal: their son, Hopper, suffered a serious stroke from which he miraculously survived. After a romance with actress Scarlett Johansson, Sean Penn made his love affair with Charlize Theron official in January 2014, in Beverly Hills, at a charity event he organised to benefit Haiti. But in June 2015, rumours in the American tabloids announced the couple’s break-up. In October 2016, on the red carpet of the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of art), the actor appeared with actress Leila George. At the beginning of August 2020, the actor confirms his marriage with Leila George on 30 July 2020.
