Ryan Murphy was born on November 30, 1965 in the United States. He grew up in Indianapolis in a family of Irish origin. His parents are the founders of a small publishing company. He received a Catholic education and was an altar boy. In high school, he discovered theater and wrote for the school newspaper. He graduated in 1983. Thus, he began studying journalism at Indiana University. As an intern, he pushed the doors of the Washington Post and the Miami Herald.

He moved to Los Angeles where he worked for the Los Angeles Times. At the end of the 1990’s, Ryan started to write scripts. From 1999 to 2001, the series Popular that he created was broadcast on The WB. The author senses the public’s interest in plastic surgery. He then creates the series Nip/Tuck. The program becomes a worldwide success.

In 2006, Hollywood is reaching out to him. He wrote and directed Running with scissors, with the casting, Alec Baldwin. In 2010, he embarked on a second feature film: Eat, Pray, Love. The adaptation of the book by Elizabeth Gilbert with Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem is a commercial success.
