Comedian, actor, editorialist, singer, radio and television presenter, Russell Brand is an artist wearing many hats. But the former heroin addict, alcoholic, who confesses to have suffered from bipolar disorder and to have experienced a period of self-mutilation is at least as well known for his bad boy attitude. Born on June 4, 1975 in Grays, Essex, England, he was raised by his mother. He made his theatrical debut at the age of 15 in a school production of the play Bugsy Malone, which gave him a taste for acting. He then began working as an extra and enrolled in the Italia Conti Academy to take acting classes. But his addiction to heroin and alcohol led to his expulsion. Far from being discouraged, he joined the Drama Centre in London, only to be expelled again for the same reasons. He started at about the same time by the one man show and as a TV presenter for the MTV channel and radio.
But it’s his experience on the small screen that makes him known to the English public from 2004, when he presents the spin-off of the reality show Big Brother, entitled Big Brother’s Big Mouth, on the channel E4. He multiplies the experiences of host, chosen in particular to present the MTV Video Music Awards, in 2008 and 2009, then the MTV Music Awards in 2012. After appearances in the series Mud in 1994, and the TV movies Cruise of the Gods and White Teeth, in 2002, he succeeds in his passage from the small to the big screen, thanks to the role he gets in the contemporary tale Penelope. A small role, but one that allows him to stand out and to be offered more important roles in The Abbey (2007) or St. Trinian’s (2007).
But it is especially one year later, thanks to the comedy Without Sarah Nothing Goes, that Russell finally manages to be known by the general public. Parodying rock stars and their excesses, Russell knows how to show a subtle sense of self-mockery, which led him to resume his role as Aldous Snow in the film American Trip in the summer of 2010. His popularity extends beyond his native England and the popular actor then appears in several Disney productions: Enchanted Stories with Adam Sandler (Christmas 2008) before being chosen to play Captain Hook in the new advertising campaign of Annie Leibovitz.
On the heart side, Russell Brand was married to singer Katy Perry, with whom he began dating in September 2009. But after an express wedding in October 2010 in India, the couple divorced in December 2011. He found love again on the arm of Laura Gallacher, 13 years his junior, who is expecting their first child. In November 2016, the couple welcomed their first child, a girl named Mabel.
