  • Occupation: singer
  • Sign: Fish
  • Date of birth: Saturday 20 February 1988 (age: 32)
  • Country: Barbados

Rihanna was born on February 20, 1988 in St. Michael’s, Barbados. Her childhood was marked by her father’s addiction to drugs and alcohol. Her parents finally divorced when she was fourteen years old. A music lover from an early age, she was spotted in 2003 by producer Evan Rogers while participating in a singing competition. He had her record a demo of four songs in New York and Jay-Z decided to sign her to a contract with Def Jam, the label he was running at the time.

In August 2005, the singer released her first album, Music of the Sun, a mix of reggae, R&B with a pop touch. It was a success: the album sold more than two million copies in the United States, where it was certified platinum, just like in Canada. Its first single, Pon de Replay, reached 2nd place on the Billboard Hot 100, and Rihanna, in order to make herself known, opened for Gwen Stefani at the time. In April 2006, she released her second album, A Girl Like Me, driven by SOS hits (it was her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for 3 consecutive weeks), Unfaithful (awarded at the NRJ Music Awards as best song of the year 2006 and sold 4.5 million copies) and Break It Off. The album itself sold 3.5 million copies. Rihanna rides the wave of her success and tours the United States with the Black Eyes Peas and Europe with the Pussycat Dolls.

With the release of the album Good Girl Gone Bad in June 2007, the singer’s stage outfits became more and more provocative. The album was once again a huge success throughout the world. With eight million copies sold, it was the second best-selling album in 2008 in the United States and remained No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. One year later, the singer released a re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad (Reloaded) with three new songs, including Disturbia, co-written by her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. The song is listened to all over the world. During her world tour, the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour, Rihanna accentuates even more her dark side. On 27 January 2009, she released an entire album of remixes from the album, Good Girl Gone Bad, The Remixes.

After dark episodes in the singer’s life with her then-boyfriend Chris Brown, who was caught punching her in the face in February 2009 while they were both on their way to a Grammy Awards ceremony, the singer’s universe becomes harder, darker, but also more mature. On 23 November 2009, she released the album Rated R, whose single Russian Roulette was ranked in the top 10 in many countries. A new triumph: the album exceeds 2 million albums sold worldwide. On 25 May 2010, she released the remixed version of the album, Rated R: Remixed. On 15 November 2010, the singer’s fifth album, Loud, is released. It is more accessible, joyful and festive than Rated R (the sounds are pop, R&B, but also dance, rock and reggae), and the artist collaborates on several tracks with rapper Eminem. The first single, Only Girl (In The World), was a worldwide success and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

In early 2011, Rihanna launched her first fragrance, Reb’l Fleur. That same year, she was featured in the American edition of Vogue magazine, becoming the third black woman in history to make the cover (after Naomi Campbell and Halle Berry). Finally, on November 21, 2011, Rihanna released her sixth album, Talk Talk Talk. The result of several collaborations with Calvin Harris (the producer who notably worked for Kylie Minogue) and Jay-Z, her tone is a digest of her last two albums. Rihanna became the artist with the most singles at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the artist who took the shortest time to land 11 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, dethroning Mariah Carey. On 8 May 2011, the singer put Where have you Been online and set a new record, with 4.7 million views in 24 hours.

In July 2017, Rihanna stars in Luc Besson’s latest feature film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, alongside Cara Delevingne.

On the private side, Rihanna has been dating rapper Chris Brown in 2008. But after a violent argument in February 2009 (the rapper was sentenced to 180 days of community service for assault and battery), the couple broke up. The singer has been very discreet about her private life ever since. In August 2016, at the MTV Video Music Awards, rapper Drake declared his love for her on stage and kissed her. In January 2020, Rihanna and Hassan Jameel, a Saudi businessman, separate after three years of romance.
