Rama X was born on July 28, 1952 in Bangkok, Thailand. Also known as Maha Vajiralongkorn, he has been King of Thailand since 2016.
Rama X is the eldest son of Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), and Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara. During his childhood, Rama X attended school in Bangkok, before joining a British school for the equivalent of junior high and high school. He then went on to study at a university in Sydney.
In 1972, he was nominated by his father as his successor to the throne. He completed his studies at a military college in Canberra, Australia, and an art degree in Bangkok.
Rama X then began a military career in the Thai army. Fighter pilot, he took part in several battles against the Khmer Rouge. He later became a general in the air force, before becoming a general in the royal army.
On 13 October 2016, his father Rama IX died at the age of 88. The advent of Rama X was then announced for 1 December 2016. He officially became king on that day.
On the private side, Rama X was married several times. On 1 May 2019, he married Suthida Tidjai, a former stewardess who was promoted to Queen of Thailand. But the king also made his polygamy official with a fifth marriage in July 2019, which he broke up a few months later. During the coronavirus containment, Rama X stayed in a luxury hotel in Germany, alongside a harem of 20 women.
