Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on June 10, 1921 in Corfu, Greece. A member of the Greek royal family, he is the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Greece. The last child of the couple, he has four older sisters. He was very young when his family went into exile in France, after the abolition of the monarchy. During his childhood, he was raised between France, England and Germany by his grandmother and uncle. They saw very little of his parents; his mother, who suffered from schizophrenia, was institutionalized, and his father went to live in Monaco.

The young prince was destined for a military career and joined the British Royal Navy in 1939. That same year, he met Elizabeth of England at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he was studying, who had come to visit the college with her father, King George VI. Elizabeth, who was only 13 years old at the time, fell under the spell of the young man, five years her senior. For several years, they corresponded and made their relationship official in July 1946 when they became engaged. Philip Mountbatten (the surname of his maternal grandparents) gave up his title of Prince of Greece and converted to Anglicanism. On November 20, 1947, the couple married at Westminster Abbey in London. On the occasion of his marriage, he received the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1952, upon the accession to the throne of Elizabeth of England, he put an end to his career in the navy, and became Prince Consort of the United Kingdom. Since then, he has accompanied the Queen in her many duties. At the same time, in the 1960s, passionate about ecology, he founded and chaired the World Wildlife Fund in the United Kingdom (WWF).

In 2011, he was appointed Lord Grand Admiral, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In May 2017, a statement from Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip was retiring from public life, effective in the fall of 2017. On December 20, 2019, Prince Philip was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in London. On the night of February 16, 2021, Prince Philip is hospitalized after a malaise. In early March, he undergoes a major heart operation at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. On March 16, 2021, according to the British press, after a month of care, he is allowed to leave the King Edward VII Hospital in London, and return to Windsor Castle.

On April 9, 2021, Prince Philip died at the age of 99 years.

In private life, the couple has four children; Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the throne (born in 1948), Anne (born in 1950), Andrew (born in 1960) and Edward (born in 1964). Prince Philip has six great-grandchildren; Mia and Elena, the daughters of Zara Philips, Savannah and Isla, the daughters of Peter Philipps, George and Charlotte the children of Prince William of England. On April 23, 2018, Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy, the seventh great-grandchild of the Duke of Edinburgh. In May 2019, Archie, her eighth great-grandchild, the son of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, joins the family. In February 2021, Princess Eugenie gives birth to a baby boy, the ninth great-grandchild of Prince Philip.
