Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on 10 June 1921 in Corfu, Greece. A member of the Greek royal family, he is the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Greece. The couple’s last child, he has four older sisters. He was very young when his family went into exile in France after the abolition of the monarchy. During his childhood, he was brought up between France, England and Germany by his grandmother and uncle. They saw very little of his parents; his mother, who suffered from schizophrenia, was interned, and his father went to live in Monaco.

The young prince was destined for a military career and joined the British Royal Navy in 1939. In the same year, it was at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth where he studied, that he met Elizabeth of England, who had come to visit the college with his father, King George VI. Elisabeth, then only 13 years old, fell under the spell of the young man, five years his senior. They corresponded for several years and then made their relationship official in July 1946 when they became engaged. Philip Mountbatten (surname of his maternal grandparents) gave up his title of Prince of Greece and converted to Anglicanism. On 20 November 1947, the couple married at Westminster Abbey in London. On the occasion of his marriage, he receives the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1952, on Elizabeth of England’s accession to the throne, he ended his career in the navy and became Prince Consort of the United Kingdom. Since then, he has accompanied the Queen in her many duties. At the same time, in the 1960s, passionate about ecology, he founded and chaired the World Wildlife Fund in the United Kingdom (WWF).

In 2011, he was appointed Lord Grand Admiral on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In May 2017, a press release from Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip would be retiring from public life as of autumn 2017.

On 20 December 2019, Prince Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London.

In private life, the couple have four children; Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the throne (born 1948), Anne (born 1950), Andrew (born 1960) and Edward (born 1964). Prince Philip has five great-grandchildren; Mia, daughter of Zara Philips, Savannah and Isla, daughters of Peter Philipps, George and Charlotte, children of Prince William of England. On April 23, 2018, Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy, the Duke of Edinburgh’s sixth great-grandchild. In May 2019, Archie, her seventh great-grandchild, son of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, joined the family.
