Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian from Glücksburg was born on June 7, 1969 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Son of Henri Laborde de Monpezat and Margrethe of Denmark, he has an older brother, Prince Frederik, Crown Prince. He was barely three years old when his mother acceded to the throne after the death of King Frederik IX of Denmark.

He studied at the private Kerbs School in Copenhagen, then at the age of 13, he went to France for a year as a boarder at the Ecole des roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre, before returning to a high school in Copenhagen where he obtained the Danish baccalaureate in 1986. He then studied agronomy at the Naesgaard School on the island of Falster.

At the age of 18, he began a military career in the regiment of Queen Margrethe. He later joined the tank squadron of the regiment of Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark. Since 2015, Prince Joachim has been working for the Danish Defence as an expert for the Armed Forces.

On February 13, 2018, his father, Prince Henrik of Denmark, died at the age of 83 at Fredensborg Castle.

On June 26, 2020, he received his diploma at the end of his year of training at the Ecole Militaire de Paris. In order to follow this training the prince and his family moved to Paris in September 2019. During the confinement in spring 2020 related to the Covid-19 epidemic, they returned to Denmark. After the deconfinement, Prince Joachim and his family returned to Paris.

In July 2020, Princess Marie of Denmark published on Instagram photos of her husband and children, on vacation at the Château de Cayx, in the Lot, property of the Danish royal family since 1974. On September 1st, 2020, Joachim of Denmark becomes the new Defense Attaché at the Danish Embassy in France, for a period of three years.

On July 24, 2020, Prince Joachim was operated on in Toulouse hospital after suffering a stroke. On August 3, 2020, he was discharged from the hospital, according to a court press release.

On the private side, he married Alexandra Manley on 18 November 1995, at Frederiksborg Castle. The couple gave birth to their first child, Nikolai, on August 28, 1999. Three years later, the couple has a second son, Felix, who was born on July 22, 2002. But in September 2004, the royal palace announces the divorce of the couple. On May 24, 2008, Prince Joachim married Frenchwoman Marie Cavallier in the village of Moegeltoender. One year later, on May 4, 2009, they welcomed a boy named Henrik. On January 24, 2012, they announce the birth of a girl, Princess Athena.
