Edward Anthony Richard Louis of England was born on March 10, 1964 in London. The youngest son of Queen Elizabeth of England and Prince Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, he grew up alongside his sister Anne (1950) and his two brothers Charles (1948) and Andrew (1960).

At the age of 8, he went to Heatherdown Preparatory School, near Ascot. He then continued his studies in Scotland, in Gordonstoun. After graduating, Edward decided to take a year off to live in New Zealand, where he taught for several months at a university. Back in England, he resumed his studies and enrolled in a history course at Cambridge University. He then went into the entertainment business and worked for several years for the Really Useful Theatre Company as a production assistant.

In the summer of 1993, Prince Edward met Sophie Rhys-Jones at a charity tennis tournament. Their engagement, announced six years later, on January 6, 1999 by Buckingham Palace, caused surprise because the young woman is not from a noble family. On June 19, 1999, their marriage was celebrated in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Prince Edward once again broke the codes linked to his rank by getting married in St. George’s Chapel, whereas all the weddings of the royal family are celebrated in Westminster Abbey. On this occasion, the couple received the title of Earl and Countess of Wessex. The Queen gave them the property of Baghshot Park in Surrey as a wedding present, which became the couple’s main residence.

On the private side, the couple has two children; Louise Mounbatten-Windsor born on November 8, 2003 and James Mounbatten-Windsor born on December 17, 2007.
