Andrew Albert Christian Edward of England, Duke of York, was born in London on 19 February 1960. Son of Queen Elizabeth of England and Prince Philip of Edinburgh, he is the third child of the couple after Prince Charles (born 1948) and Princess Anne (born 1950) and the first born under the gold of Buckingham Palace. He occupies fifth place in the order of accession to the British throne. In his early years, he was tutored by a tutor at Buckingham Palace, and at the age of 8 he continued his education at Heatherdown Preparatory school in Ascot and Gordonstoun School in Scotland before flying to Ontario, Canada at the age of 17. After graduating from high school, he decided not to continue his studies and joined the Royal Navy in 1979.
Prince Andrew served in the Falklands War aboard the aircraft carrier Invincible in 1982, when the media portrayed him as a fearless and courageous young prince. After training as a helicopter pilot, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1984. The Prince then had a long career in the Royal Navy, punctuating it with the position of officer in the Diplomatic Directorate of the Naval Staff at the Ministry of Defence. After 22 years of good and loyal service, Andrew of England devoted himself from 2001 to the public activities of the Royal Family. In 2006, he was awarded the UK’s highest honour, Knight of the Order of the Garter. A globetrotting prince, he is currently the ambassador for British international trade and industry and travels all over the world representing his country.
Prince Andrew’s image has been tarnished in recent years; his lifestyle, extravagant spending and unsavoury friendships are regular targets of the English tabloids. In January 2015, the sex scandal involving his friend, New York banker Jeffrey Epstein, puts him once again at the centre of a media whirlwind. Virginia Roberts, an American, accuses the prince of having had sex when she was a minor at the time of the events in 2001. In August 2019, Jeffrey Epstein, accused of paedophilia and prostitution of minors, committed suicide in prison a few weeks after his arrest.
On November 20, 2019, an official press release announced that Prince Andrew was retiring from public life, with the agreement of the Queen.
On the private side, Andrew of England married Sarah Ferguson on 23 July 1986 at Westminster Abbey. The couple gave birth to two daughters; Beatrice d’York (born 08/08/1988) and Eugenie d’York (born 23/03/1990) before separating in 1992. The divorce judgement is pronounced in 1996.
