Penelope Meredith Eastwood was born on April 16, 1953 in London. Her father, Reginal Wray Eastwood is a former butcher who made his fortune by founding the Angus Steakhouse chain of restaurants. She grew up with her younger brother, Peter, and spent part of her schooling in Switzerland. She graduated from the London School of Economics in 1976.

On October 20, 1979, she celebrated her marriage to Norton Knatchbull at Romsey Abbey in Hampshire. Through this alliance, the young commoner is now related to the British royal family. Indeed, Norton Knatchbull is the son of Countess Patricia Mountbatten, cousin of the Duke of Edinburgh. Norton Knatchbull is the godson of Prince Philip of England, and in his youth he studies with Prince Charles. At their wedding they received the title of Lord and Lady Romsey.

In 1981, the couple started a family with the birth of their first child, a boy named Nicholas. Prince Charles agreed to be one of the godparents of the newborn. Subsequently, the couple has two daughters, Alexandra, born in 1982 (whose godmother is the Princess of Wales) and Leonora in 1986.

During this ordeal, Prince Philip was very present in Lady Romsey’s life and introduced her to carriage racing to entertain her. The young woman took a passion for this sport and became the partner of the Duke of Edinburgh during equestrian competitions, from the mid-90s. In the years that followed, the British press relayed rumors of an extramarital relationship between Lady Romsey and Prince Philip.

In 2005, following the death of her father-in-law, Penny Romsey changed her title like her husband. They took the titles of Lord and Lady Brabourne. The couple manages the family estate of Broadlands.

In 2010, she was named Grand Steward of Romsey. In 2017, she also receives the title of Countess Mountbatten upon the death of her mother-in-law.
