Born in 1986 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Oscar Pistorius was born without fibula, which led him to have both legs amputated below the knees when he was only 11 months old. He wears prostheses from the age of 2, and proves his great tenacity by practicing many sports such as boxing or rugby. It is following a fractured knee that he discovered running, facilitating his rehabilitation. He never left this sport until he became one of its international stars.

He started competing in disabled sports in 2004, during the Paralympic Games, winning 3rd place in the 100-meter race and first place in the 200-meter race. In 2007, he won 2nd place in Rome in the B race for able-bodied athletes. There followed long debates and extensive analysis to determine whether Oscar Pistorius’ prostheses gave him an advantage over able-bodied runners. Depending on the results, Oscar Pistorius may or may not be able to compete in certain events.

In 2011, Oscar Pistorius improved his own record in the 400 meter race, qualifying for the 2011 World Championships in South Korea. Following his relay race for which he received a medal, he became the first disabled athlete to medal at the World Championships alongside able-bodied athletes.

In the 2012 Paralympic Games, he broke the world record in the 200-meter dash and took second place in the 200-meter dash, as well as winning a gold medal in the 4×400-meter relay race.

On the private side, Oscar Pistorius was at the heart of a criminal court case in 2013, found guilty of the manslaughter of Reeva Steenkamp, his girlfriend of 3 months. Indeed, on February 14, 2013, Reeva Steenkamp was found dead in the bathroom of their home, killed by three bullets, including two to the head. Oscar Pistorius would have taken her for a burglar, but will be judged for his negligence and will get 5 years in prison.
