Monica Lewinsky is an American woman, who became famous in the late 90s following the scandal of her affair with the President of the United States while she was an intern at the White House.
Born in San Francisco in 1973 into a well-to-do family, Monica Lewinsky first studied psychology. In 1995, she moved to Washington, D.C. and became an intern in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Between November 1995 and March 1997, she liaised with Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States. The affair, known as the “Lewinsky Affair” or “Monicagate” broke out in January 1998 when the young woman’s name appeared in a file dealing with a sexual harassment case against Bill Clinton. If Monica first denied any relationship with the president, she was quickly put to the wall. One of her colleagues, Linda Tripp, recorded conversations in which Monica talked to her about her relationship with the president. She was then accused of perjuring herself in court. The President first denied having had sexual relations with his intern before confessing to having had “inappropriate relations with the young woman”. In an attempt to take advantage of this sudden notoriety, Monica Lewinsky wrote her biography, Monica’s Story, in which she recounts the scandal that changed her life. A few months later, she launched a line of handbags bearing her name, before agreeing to shoot an ad for a diet brand. In 2003, Monica Lewinsky was a guest on a reality TV show in which she advised young female competitors to choose masked men. In recent years, the young woman has totally deserted the screens, refusing all press solicitations. Now a recluse, her goal is to turn the page and get involved in the defense of victims of humiliation and harassment online.
