Maxima Zorreguieta was born on May 17, 1971 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eldest daughter of Jorge Zorreguieta and Maria del Carmen Cerruti, Maxima has two brothers and one sister, Martin, Juan and Ines and three half-sisters from a previous marriage to her father.

A privileged child, Maxima studied at the private Northlands School in Buenos Aires where she received a humanistic education, learned empathy for the weakest and participated in humanitarian actions. In 1988, she obtained her bachelor’s degree and continued her studies at the Catholic University of Argentina where she graduated in 1995 with a degree in economics. She then tried her luck in New York and landed her first job in a bank.

In April 1999, during the Seville feria, Maxima met a certain Alexander at the home of mutual friends. Far from imagining that this meeting would change her destiny a few weeks later, she invited her suitor to meet her in New York. They meet again two weeks later, and he confesses to her his royal ancestry and his status as Crown Prince. Their budding romance arouses a strong reaction from human rights associations and public opinion is hostile to a future union. At issue was the past of Maxima’s father, Jorge Zorreguieta, a member of General Jorge Videla’s government between 1976 and 1981 during the Argentinean military dictatorship.

This hostility echoes the history of Willem-Alexander’s parents; his mother, Queen Beatrix, had endured the same reluctance in 1966 from the Dutch, who refused his union with Claus-Georg von Amsberg, a German diplomat. In 2000, the Prime Minister requested the opening of an investigation into the accusations against Maxima’s father. The final report showed that he was not directly involved in the repression of the junta. The debate is closed, Queen Beatrix can officially announce the engagement of her son and Maxima on March 30, 2001, and at the press conference Maxima reveals that his father will not attend his wedding. The ceremony takes place on February 2, 2002, Maxima becomes Princess of the Netherlands and triggers the support of her fellow citizens and the gotha.

The couple’s popularity grows over the years and the birth of their three daughters, Catharina-Amalia (born on 07/12/2003), Alexia (26/06/2005) and Ariane (10/04/2007), all as cheerful as their mother, has conquered the hearts of the Dutch. On April 30, 2013, the abdication of Beatrix of the Netherlands in favor of her son Willem-Alexander makes Maxima the new Queen Consort of the Netherlands.
