Discreet and endowed with a typically English subtle humor, Martin Freeman is known as well on the small as on the big screen. A true chameleon, he plays colorful characters in various genres such as romantic, zombie, fantasy or historical films.

Born in Aldershot, England, into a Catholic family, he is the youngest of five children. Orphaned from his father at a very young age, he lived with his mother and quickly suffered from health problems such as asthma. After completing his media studies, he entered a drama school in London. His path was set, and he stayed the course with tenacity.

Starting out in an amateur theater group, he was spotted and went on to play small roles in British TV series. His career took a decisive turn when he landed the role of Tim Canterbury in the famous series The Office.

Since 2003 he has not ceased to move from the big to the small screen, taking part in TV series such as The Robinsons or La vie en Face, but also to play a young lover in Love Actually and of course to give the line to John Malkovich in H2G2: the guide of the galactic traveler. This role will open even more doors internationally.

Since July 25, 2010, he is appreciated by all for his role as Watson in the series Sherlock. This role will allow him to access great distinctions such as the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2011, and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor. On the big screen, he donned the costume of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy since 2012, with a release of the last part scheduled for December 2014.

On the private side, Martin Freeman lives with the English actress Amanda Abbington, with whom he shares the screen in the series Sherlock. They have two children, Joe and Grace. In December 2016, the actor announced that the couple had separated.
