Daughter of the actress Nathalie Baye and Johnny Hallyday, Laura Smet, was born on 15 November 1983 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. She stopped studying at the age of 16 and took acting lessons from Raymond Acquaviva.

While attending the Emergence workshops, she was spotted at the age of 19 by Olivier Assayas, who recommended her to Xavier Giannoli for his first feature film, Les Corps impatients.
