One day, he was asked to do his self-portrait. She took three pictures. The first showed a piece of profile, on the second the face was partly eaten by locks of hair, and completely veiled on the third. Was it because too many people were already sharing the light that Kate never dreamed of being anywhere but in the shadows?

Kate Barry was born on April 8, 1967 in England, daughter of Jane Birkin and composer John Barry (she only discovered her biological father at the age of twelve). Her parents separated the year she was born and she grew up in France with Serge Gainsbourg, then Jacques Doillon. After graduating from the Parisian Chambre syndicale de haute couture in the early 80’s, Kate worked for a few years as a stylist but finally turned to a career as a photographer at the age of 28.

She exhibits in Tokyo, Japan, Italy and Paris: her works oscillate between landscapes and portraits of stars (Sophie Marceau, Laetitia Casta, her sisters of course) or anonymous people, employees of Rungis for example. She received her first commission from the Japanese Madame Figaro, followed by collaborations with numerous magazines, from Elle to Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Sunday Times Magazine. Kate Barry also produces photos for album covers, her mother of course, but also Lara Fabian, Raphaël and Carla Bruni.

She herself fought against drug addiction problems in her adolescence and created the Apte (Help and prevention of drug addiction through mutual aid) near Soissons.

In 2011, she did a portrait of Philippe Djian for the Empreintes series and the following year, in 2012, Kate teamed up with another writer, her ex-boyfriend and still very close friend, Jean Rolin, for a four-handed book entitled Dinard, a real estate autobiography. In September 2013, she presented a beautiful exhibition entitled “Point of view” at the Galerie Cinéma d’Anne-Dominique Toussaint.

Kate Barry died on December 11, 2013 after a fatal fall from the 5th floor of her apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. She leaves her son Roman de Kermadec as an orphan.
