Born in Hamburg, Germany, Karl Otto Lagerfeldt of his real name is the son of a Scandinavian businessman and a Prussian mother. He grew up in a well-to-do environment between his parents’ estate in Bissenmoor near Bad Bramstedt and Hamburg. At the beginning of the 1950s, Karl and his mother left Germany and moved to Paris. He attended the Lycée Montaigne and then began his career as a fashion illustrator. In 1954, he won the first prize, tied with Yves Saint Laurent, of the International Wool Secretariat, organized by Woolmark.

Noticed by jury member Pierre Balmain, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as the couturier’s personal assistant from 1955 to 1962. Artistic director of fashion designer Jean Patou from 1959, he then joined the Chloé brand in 1963 for its ready-to-wear collection and accessories line. He remained in this position until 1983, and at the same time collaborated with the Italian fashion house Fendi from 1965. In 1983, the Chanel fashion house collapsed after the death of Coco Chanel and came close to closing down. Karl Lagerfeld was then chosen to perpetuate the spirit of the designer and became the brand’s artistic director. He chose the model Inès de la Fressange to embody the brand. At the same time, in 1984, he created Karl Lagerfeld, his own fashion house. In 1991, Chloé called on him once again to help her brand, which was in full decline.

In 2004, H&M asked the couturier to collaborate with the brand to launch a collection accessible to all. In 2007, after reselling all his brands to Tommy Hilfiger, he created K par Karl, a more accessible line for men and women. In 2008, he collaborated with Coty to launch a line of perfumes and posed on a road safety advertisement to encourage people to wear the yellow reflective vest. In 2010, he was made Commander of the Legion of Honor by Nicolas Sarkozy. In 2011, he designed the new jersey of the French team, and became the muse of the Volkswagen advertising.

Passionate about photography, Karl Lagerfeld opened the Lagerfeld Gallery in 1998. He has published many books of photographs. In 2016, he exhibits his work at the Pinacothèque de Paris. He has also photographed several advertising campaigns for Chanel.
