Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Daughter of a Jamaican-born Stanford University economics professor and an Indian-born oncologist, she has one sister. After her parents’ divorce, she followed her mother to work in Canada. After several years, she returned to Washington, D.C., where she attended Howard University. After graduating in political science, she continued her education at the Hastings Law School of the University of California.

In 1990, she was called to the California Bar, where she began her career as an assistant district attorney for Alameda County. In 2004, she was appointed District Attorney of San Francisco and was elected California Attorney General from 2011 to 2017.

At the same time, the magistrate began her political career in 2015, when Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer announced that she would not be a candidate in 2016. Kamala Harris became the first candidate to run for the Senate. In November 2016, she was elected with 61.6 percent of the California senatorial vote, and was sworn in in January 2017 before Vice President Joe Biden. On November 7, 2020, four days after the presidential election, Joe Biden was elected the 46th President of the United States. Kamala Harris became Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman to hold this position. Her inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2021.

On the private side, she has been married to lawyer Douglas Emhoff since August 2014. Her husband has two children from a first marriage; Cole and Ella.
