Justin Paul Theroux, born on August 10, 1971 in Washington, is the son of Phyllis Grissim, a journalist and writer for the Washington Post and Eugene Theroux, a corporate lawyer. He has a brother, Sebastian, born in 1989. Several members of his family are prominent in publishing, he is the nephew of travel writer Paul Edward Theroux, and his cousin Louis Theroux is a BBC journalist and author. After studying art at university, he chose acting and moved to New York.

In 1996, he appeared for the first time on the big screen in an independent film, I shoot Andy Wharol by Mary Harron.
