Born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, Johnny Depp lived a troubled adolescence, marked at the age of 15 by his parents’ divorce. In search of a new direction, he found a refuge in music and began playing the electric guitar. He joined the band The Flame – which later became The Kids – and even opened for the Iggy Pop tour. Two years later, the band tried their luck in Los Angeles but failed to get off the ground. So each of them decided to go their own way.

In 1983, Johnny Depp married makeup artist Lori Allison. The relationship lasted only two years, but Lori Allison introduced him to Nicolas Cage, which earned Johnny Depp his first appearance in Wes Crave’s Nightmare. Johnny Depp thought he had found his way and so he trained in theatre at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles. When the film came out, the debutant actor got a small role in Oliver Stone’s Platoon. But it was the television series 21 Jump Street, started in 1987, that really launched his career and made him very popular. A victim of his own success, the actor then prefers to flee the series and breaks his contract to turn to the film career that awaits him. In 1988, he became friends with the American actress Winona Ryder, who was 17 at the time. Madly in love, Johnny Depp decided to get “Winona Forever” tattooed on his arm shortly after their engagement, but they finally broke up shortly afterwards, in 1993. He then decides to erase his tattoo to keep only “Wino Forever”. Then, in 1994, he met the icon of the catwalks, Kate Moss. Their passion made the tabloid headlines before ending in 1997.

The actor made his movie debut as the headliner with John Waters’ Cry-Baby in 1990. From then on, he multiplies the interpretation of eccentric and naive characters, out of step with reality, but always touching. We see him in the role of his consecration, Edward in Silver Hands by Tim Burton, in 1990. The director has made him his favourite actor and has worked with him on Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), the animated film The Funeral Wedding (he lends his voice to the main character) (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Evil Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010) and finally Dark Shadows (2012). In the 1990s, the actor flees the big productions and turns to writers-directors with a strong artistic identity like Emir Kusturica with notably Arizona dream (1993), Jim Jarmusch with Dead Man (1995) and Terry Gilliam with Las Vegas Parano (1998). In 1997, the actor tries for the first time to direct a feature film with The Brave, where he directs Marlon Brando, presented in official competition at Cannes. 1998 was the year he met French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis. From this union were born two children, Lily Rose Melody (born May 27, 1999) and Jack John Christopher III (born April 9, 2002).

In 1999, the actor was awarded a César d’honneur in recognition of his career. The same year, he played in La neuvième porte by Roman Polanski with the latter’s wife, Emmanuelle Seigner. Then, in 2000, he shared the bill with another French actress, Juliette Binoche, in Le Chocolat. He even made an appearance in the French film Ils se marièrent et ont eu beaucoup d’enfants by Yvan Attal, released in 2004. But it was really the role of Jack Sparrow in the saga Pirates of the Caribbean, a huge commercial success from 2003 to 2011, that allowed Johnny Depp to be appreciated from another side of the audience. During these shoots, Johnny Depp fell in love with the Bahamas and decided to treat himself to a private island for the modest sum of 3.5 million dollars, as well as a yacht. His other films include Desperado 2: Once Upon a Time in Mexico, starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, and Neverland with Kate Winslet.

At the end of 2011, Johnny Depp joins the cast of the film Rhum Express. On the set, rumours lend the actor an affair with his partner, 26-year-old Amber Heard. A few months later Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp officially announced their separation on June 19th 2012. On February 3, 2015, Johnny Depp discreetly marries Amber Heard in their Los Angeles home in an intimate ceremony, before celebrating their union surrounded by their friends on the actor’s private island in the Bahamas, Little Halls Pond Cay. In May 2016, after 15 months of marriage, Amber Heard filed for divorce. In August 2016, their divorce is granted. In January 2017, a judgement is issued regarding the division of the assets of the two former spouses.

On November 2, 2020, Johnny Depp lost his libel suit against the British tabloid The Sun, which he had described as “hitting women”. The actor is appealing the ruling.
