John Stephens of his real name was born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio. As an altar boy from a very young age, he discovered his passion for singing in church. Every Sunday, he sings gospel music and at the same time learns to play the piano from his music-loving grandmother. He became choirmaster of the Bethel parish in the suburbs of Philadelphia. As a student, he won a scholarship to study literature at the University of Pennsylvania. On campus, his talents as a singer and pianist hit the mark, and he joined a jazz band.
His multiple talents as a composer, arranger, pianist and performer allowed him to distinguish himself and work for many artists. In 1998, he is pianist on the track Everything is everything by Lauryn Hill. His performance allowed him to acquire a certain notoriety and to multiply prestigious collaborations with Alicia Kays, Kanye West and Jay-Z.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the young singer who wanted to go solo struggled to find a record company and released his first independent albums (Live at Jimmy’s Uptown). But success was not there. It was in 2003, when Kanye West set up his production company, that the artist finally signed his first contract and for the occasion took the pseudonym John Legend. In 2004, Major Columbia spotted the young prodigy and allowed him to publish the album Get Lifted. It was a revelation to the general public and he won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the same time. Two years later, he confirmed his talent with Once Again, which won three Grammy Awards in 2006; Revelation of the Year, Best R’n’B Song for Ordinary People, and Best R’n’B Album.
An emblematic R’n’B artist, he continues his collaborations; in 2010, with the hip-hop group, The Roots, he released the album Wake up! and in 2011 with the group MSTRKRFT, he laid his voice on the single Heartbreaker. He also participates in film soundtracks, with the song Who did that to you from the film Django Unchained. In 2015, his duet with Common on the song Glory, taken from the music of the film Selma, won him the Golden Globe and the Oscar for best song.
On the private life side, John Legend is married since September 14, 2013 to top model Chrissy Teigen, whom he met on the set of the Stereo video clip in 2007. In October 2015, the couple announced on social networks that they were expecting a happy event. On 14 April 2016, Chrissy Teigen gives birth to a daughter named Luna Simone. In November 2017, Chrissy Teigen announces on social networks that she is expecting a second child. On 17 May 2018, she gives birth to a baby boy, Miles Theodore. On 1 October 2020, Chrissy Teigen announces on social networks that she has had a miscarriage.
