Joseph Robinette Biden Junior was born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Son of Joseph R. Biden, a car salesman and Catherine Finnegan, he is the eldest of a tribe of five children. He was 10 years old when the whole family moved to the small state of Delaware following a reversal of fortune. His childhood was marked by a stutter that earned him the taunts of his classmates. The little boy overcomes this handicap by reciting poems in front of his mirror. As a teenager, Joe Biden devoted himself to his studies and chose to study law at Syracuse University, from which he graduated in 1968.

In November 1972, on the eve of his 30th birthday, he was elected Senator in Delaware. After an amateur campaign, with the help of one of his sisters they made homemade leaflets, he became the youngest senator in the United States. A member of the Democratic Party, he has had a brilliant career within the institution; from 1987 to 1995 he chaired the Senate Judicial and Criminal Committee before becoming head of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2002.

In 1987, he decided to run for the White House for the presidential election of November 1988. But Joe Biden was soon forced to abandon his candidacy in the face of controversy; he plagiarized Neil Kinnock, leader of the British Labour Party, in one of his campaign speeches. At the same time, his health problems – a double brain aneurysm – kept him out of politics for a few months. Pugnacious, Joe Biden relapsed twenty years later when he was again a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 2008 presidential election. Withdrawn from the race in January 2008, his outspokenness coupled with a seasoned foreign policy background earned him the choice of his former rival Barack Obama as his running mate.

On 4 November 2008, during the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States, he became Vice-President. In January 2009, before he was sworn in, he resigned as Senator of Delaware after 36 years of loyal service. In November 2012, he was re-elected as Vice President of the United States.

In April 2019, Joe Biden entered the race for the presidential election of 2020, and became the candidate of the American Democratic Party against Donald Trump. On November 7, 2020, four days after the presidential election, the American media put an end to the suspense and announced the victory of Joe Biden, elected 46th president of the United States.

On the private side, Joe Biden married Neilia in 1966, with whom he has three children; two boys, Beau, Hunter and a daughter Naomi. But on December 18, 1972, he lost his wife and daughter in a tragic car accident. His two sons, also victims of the accident, were hospitalized for several weeks. In 1977, Joe Biden remarried Jill Tracy Jacobs. They had a baby daughter, Ashley, in 1981. On May 30, 2015, Joe Biden’s eldest son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer at the age of 46.
