Joaquin Phoenix is an American actor born in Puerto Rico. He is known for his atypical face, which one could see in front of the camera of many great directors, of which James Gray, with whom he shot three films marking in his career: The Yards, The night belongs to us and Two Lovers.

Coming from a family of actors – his brother River in particular, died in 1993 of an overdose -, he bathed in the world of the cinema since his youngest age, after having travelled a lot throughout the United States with his parents, sweet hippies belonging to a sect: The Children of God. It was his uncommon roots that led him to accept the role of Freddie in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, in which he brilliantly plays an alcoholic sailor who is completely lost and is saved by the methods of a psychology guru.

Phoenix likes roles where he puts himself in danger. His debut on the big screen is in Spitting Portrait of a Model Family, behind the features of young Gary who compensates for his father’s violence with porn addiction, then those of a teenager in distress who will fall under the poisonous spell of a woman ready for anything.

The actor goes so far as to invent a premature retirement from cinema to better come back in a fake documentary about his new career as a rapper in the film I’m still here, by Casey Affleck. But it is above all for his masterful interpretation of Johnny Cash in Walk the line, which earned him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination, that Joaquin Phoenix made his mark.

On May 28, 2017, the actor received the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in You were never really here.

On January 6, 2020, he won the Best Actor Award for his role in Joker at the Golden Globes ceremony. On February 9, 2020, he also won the Oscar for Best Actor for this role.

On the private side, Joaquin Phoenix meets the actress Rooney Mara on the set of Mary Magdalene. The couple officialized their story at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2017. In September 2020, the couple welcomes their first child, a boy named River.
