Born December 4, 1969 in New York City, Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, was raised by his mother Gloria, after his father left when he was 11 years old. He had a difficult childhood in the Brooklyn neighborhood and began dealing at the age of 13. He befriended one of his classmates, Chris Wallace, who later became the rapper Notorious B.I.G. At the age of 20, he decided to give it all up for hip hop.

In 1995, he founded his own label, Roc-A-Fella, with Ramon Dash, thanks to Notorious B.I.G. and Puff Daddy. In 1996, he released his first record, Reasonable Doubt, a critical and commercial success. After the assassination of Notorious B.I.G. in 1997, Jay-Z launches into a trilogy which will reveal him and in which he relates his past as a drug dealer. Released the same year, his first volume In My Lifetime, a platinum record, is a mixed success: some hip hop fans accuse Jay-Z of being a commercial rap artist. The second volume, Hard Knock Life in 1998, was a huge success, selling more than five million copies and winning a Grammy Award for best rap album. Jay-Z concluded his trilogy with Life & Times in 1999, which ranked #1 in the charts and again won a Grammy Award (Best Rap Album).

On September 11, 2001, he released his 6th studio album, The Blueprint, in which he tackles, among other things, his main rival, Nas. A year later, he released a double album, The Gift & The Curse, which met with limited success. Shortly afterwards, in November 2003, he announced his retirement from the music business after the release of his Black Album. He even organized a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden. In January 2005, his label Roc-A-Fella is bought by Def Jam and he becomes president of one of the most important hip hop labels, Def Jam. He finally came back to the forefront in 2006 with a tenth opus, Kingdom Come. In November 2007, he released American Gangster, an album inspired by Ridley Scott’s eponymous film about the life of drug dealer Frank Lucas. In September 2009, he released The Blueprint 3, under his new label, Roc Nation. Like its 10 previous albums, The Blueprint 3 is No. 1 in sales in the United States in the first week of its release. Jay-Z thus breaks Elvis Presley’s record, which earned him a place on the World Guinness Record.

In 2012, he is the second richest rapper according to Forbes magazine with an estimated net fortune of $550 million.
