Javier Bardem was born on March 1, 1969 in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. His grandparents were actors, his mother Pilar is a theater actress, and his uncle Juan Antonio Bardem is a director. He spent his childhood in Madrid with his brother Carlos and his sister Monica, and lived with his mother after his parents separated. As a teenager, he was very athletic and became passionate about rugby, which he started playing in high school. At the age of 16, he participated in the Spanish junior championship. Then, attracted by the plastic arts, he chose painting and enrolled at the Escuela de Arte in Madrid. But, he was quickly caught up by the artistic fiber he inherited from his family.

Spotted by the Spanish director José Bigas Luna, he got his first role in 1990 in Les Vies de Loulou. The collaboration between the two artists continues with; Jambon Jambon (1992), Macho (1994), or La lune et le téton (1995). In 1996, he won the Goya for best actor for his role in Mouth to mouth. The following year, Pedro Almodovar revealed him to the public with a character of paraplegic policeman in In the flesh (1997). With Mondays in the Sun by Fernando Leon de Aranoa, he won his second Goya for best actor in 2003.

At the same time, the actor began a career outside Spain since the early 2000s. He turns under the direction of Julian Schnabel in Before the night, which earned him the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival and a nomination for the Oscar for best actor. In 2004, for the needs of the film Mar Adentro by Alejandro Amenabar, in which he plays a quadriplegic, he made up for five hours before each day of shooting. On the private side, the actor is married to Penélope Cruz since July 2010. The couple has two children; Leonardo (born in January 2011) and Luna (born in July 2013). On July 17, 2021, his mother, the actress Pilar Bardem died at the age of 82 years.
