Star of the group Thirty Seconds to Mars and successful actor, Jared Leto is at the head of a fortune estimated at nearly 100 million
Jared Joseph Leto owes a lot to his mother who encouraged him to take up an artistic profession. As a result, Jared is now recognized as much for his acting talent as for his role as leader of the rock band “Thirty Seconds to Mars”.
The angel-faced actor-singer-guitarist, born on December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana, did not have an easy childhood. Shortly after his birth, his parents divorced. His mother, Constance, raised him alone with his older brother, Shannon. The two boys were very close and supported each other in adversity. “We made a pact to succeed together in life,” says Jared.
Their father, Tony, died quickly after having two other sons from a second marriage. Money problems brought their mother to the brink of poverty. The family found themselves in a caravan, living in a hippie community for a while before hitting the road again. One move follows another. Jared goes to live in Wyoming, Colorado, Virginia and even Haiti. But according to him, this lack of stability has at least one virtue: “These trips have given me a more open view of our world,” he says.
At the age of 15, he left school. A career as a delinquent awaits him but his passion for music and art in general is the strongest. Finally he left to study painting at the University of Arts in Philadelphia before reorienting himself, at 19, to study film at the New York City School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
He then moved to Los Angeles in 1992 and had several castings. His handsome side and deep blue eyes soon attracted attention. His first real role came in 1994 with the series “Angela, 15 years old”, which also revealed Claire Danes.
The following year he appeared for the first time on the big screen in the film “The Patchwork of Life”, alongside Winona Ryder. However, his career did not take off and he only got second roles in films that were often anecdotal. He then took the opportunity to found in 1998, with his brother, the rock band “Thirty Seconds to Mars”. Jared takes care of the vocals and the guitar while Shannon takes over the drums. The first album, eponymous, was released in 2002. The success is limited but nevertheless sufficient to continue. Three other albums followed (“A Beautiful Lie” in 2005, “This Is War” in 2009 and “Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams” in 2013) which allowed the group to gradually increase their notoriety – “This Is War” is platinum in many countries and won several awards.
At the same time, Jared continues to tour in movies. If he still plays second roles, his films are much more striking. He played in “La Ligne Rouge” by Terrence Malick (1998), “Fight Club” (1999) by David Fincher and “Une vie volée” (2000) where he met Winona Ryder again. But it is his performance “Requiem for a Dream” by Darren Aronofsky in 2001 that reveals him to the general public. For the role, he does not hesitate to lose 15 kilos! But Jared is ready to abuse his body to get into the skin of a character. In “Chapter 27”, in 2007, he gains 30 kilos to play Mark Chapman, John Lennon’s assassin, and just before the shooting of “Dallas Buyers Club” (2014), he loses 12 in only one month.
After “Requiem for a Dream” he returns to more classic roles. In 2002 he played in David Fincher’s new film, “Panic Room”, with Jodie Foster and little Kirsten Dunst. In 2004, he played with Colin Farrell in Oliver Stone’s film “Alexander”. In 2006 he shared the poster with Nicolas Cage and Ethan Hawke in Andrew Niccol’s “Lord of War”. In 2009 he landed the lead role in “Mr Nobody” by Jaco Van Dormael.
His activities as a musician then keep him away from the screens until 2014, year of release of “Dallas Buyers Club”. His interpretation of an HIV-positive transvestite allowed him to win the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition, Jared has been one of the ambassadors of Hugo Boss fragrances since 2011.
On the heart side, the actor-musician can pride himself on a prestigious hunting list. Indeed, after a rather long affair with Cameron Diaz in the early 2000s, we could see on his arm Scarlett Johansson, Paris Hilton, Ashley Olsen, Britney Spears, or Lindsay Lohan…
