James Franco – real name James Edward Franco – born April 19, 1978 in Palo Alto, California, grew up in California with his two younger brothers, Tom (also an actor) and Dave. Of Jewish faith, he has Portuguese and Swedish origins through his father and Russian through his mother. His charm is already taking its toll on his high school classmates, who voted him “Most Beautiful Smile”. In 1996, James Franco enrolled at UCLA – University of California at Los Angeles – and at the same time took theater classes to overcome his shyness. His interest in the field eventually turned into a professional project, and Franco dropped out of school to take acting classes at Robert Carnegie’s Playhouse West. In 1999, he won the lead role in the series Freaks and Geeks, which, due to lack of audience, ended after a year. The same year, the actor appeared in the teenage comedy College Attitude, alongside Drew Barrymore. He continues his teen movie career with Dangerous Seduction by David Raynr (2000). The following year, he received a Golden Globe for his performance in the bopic devoted to the legendary actor, Once upon a time James Dean. In 2002, he got the role that made him a world star, that of Harry Osborn, the superhero’s sidekick partner in Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Determined to shatter his image as a wise boy, he plays Robert De Niro’s rebellious son in the thriller Father and Cop (2002), then dances for the Company, Nicolas Cage’s first feature film as director (2003). In 2005, he became the young English warrior in the medieval fresco Tristan & Yseut. The following year, the actor decides to go back to university: once again a student at UCLA, he obtains the authorization to validate his semesters more quickly and thus already graduated in 2008. But the actor doesn’t stop there, and decides to follow a triple curriculum at Columbia University for writing studies, and at New York University and the Tish School of the Arts, where he takes film classes. He proudly earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University in 2010. Since then, the actor, a young first in his own time, has been teaching at the prestigious Yale University in Connecticut, USA. He has also been admitted to the University of Houston, where he is preparing a PhD in English and Film. In parallel, he keeps a blog for the American version of the Huffington Post. But the actor, who is passionate about drawing, does not stop there: in 2011, he has his first exhibition in Europe at the Peres Projects in Berlin. As if that wasn’t enough, he also collaborated that same year with Gus Van Sant for the exhibition “Unfinished” organized by the Gagosian Gallery in L.A. The actor with an overwhelming sex appeal was chosen as the muse of the Gucci by Gucci perfume for men in 2008. That same year, he played the crazy love of the first openly gay American politician Harvey Milk in the film of the same name. He continues to surprise by crossing over to the other side of the camera with small independent films such as Fool’s Gold (2005), the Ape (2005), Good Time Max (2007) and most recently, in 2011, The Broken Tower and Sal. He also tries his hand at a new register, comedy, with En cloque, mode d’emploi (2007), Délire Express (2008) and, in the same year, Mange, prier, aime, where he gives the line to the woman on a long journey after a difficult divorce, Julia Roberts. In 2010, we find him in 127 Hours of Danny Boyle where he plays a young climber stuck for 5 days in a canyon in Utah, a true story. The same year, he plays the controversial poet Allen Ginsberg in Howl by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Now a leading actor on the Hollywood scene, he co-presents the 83rd Academy Awards in February 2011 alongside Anne Hathaway. The same year, he is featured in The Planet of the Apes: My Origins, a prequel to the science fiction saga. He also appears in more underground cinema with “Rebel”, a short film on a soundtrack by Notorious B.I.G. presented at the 2011 Venice Biennale. In 2012, the actor spends most of his time on the set with Spring Breakers (to be released in March 2013), a dramatic film alongside Selena Gomez, and The Fantaic World of Oz (to be released in April 2013), the new Disney blockbuster. In terms of his private life, the handsome dark-haired man shamelessly admits that he has never been a stud. “Embarrassed, shy and immature” according to him, he released Ahna O’Reilly, also an actress, for 5 years. The couple separated in July 2011. Since then, the actor has been close to Amanda Seyfried, his partner on screen in the film, who is also his partner in the film.
