Harvey Weinstein was born on March 19, 1952 in Flushing. Elder son of a diamond cutter, he has a younger brother, Bob, born in 1954. The two brothers grew up in New York, in Queens and, very early, are passionate about the cinema.

This common passion for the 7th art will lead the two brothers to work together. In 1979, they created the company Miramax, whose name is a tribute to their parents, Miriam and Max. Harvey was in charge of finding the films and Bob was in charge of the financial management of the company. They started producing independent films (Reservoir Dogs, The Crying Game), and became known with the film Sex, Lies and Video, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1989. At the same time, in 1993, they created Dimension Films, a company that produces B series and horror films. The tandem multiplies the collaborations with prestigious directors, Quentin Tarentino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez…

In 1993, Disney bought the company Miramax. The successes follow one another and the Weinstein brothers continue their collaboration with their favorite filmmakers: Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, the Lord of the Rings trilogy…But little by little, disagreements appear, and in 2005, Harvey and Robert Weinstein decide to leave the Disney group.

In 2005, they founded a new company, The Weinstein Company, which will allow them to rebound and continue their rise. They produce many American successes: Sin City, Scream 4, Inglorious Basterds. At the same time, they also distributed several foreign films in the United States (Indigènes, The King’s Speech…) including The Artist, which won the Oscar for best actor and best film. Over the years, Harvey Weinstein became a very influential producer in Hollywood. Their catalog continues to grow: Happiness Therapy (2012), Django Unchained (2013), Crouching Tiger 2 (2016), Intouchable (2018).

Harvey Weinstein’s image was overshadowed by a sex scandal in 2015. In March 2015, an Italian model, Ambra Battilana, accuses Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. There is no prosecution and the case stays there. But in October 2017, a New York Times article unveils an investigation into other sexual harassment cases, citing actress Ashley Judd, and several female collaborators of the producer. The Weinstein Company ousts him following the publication of the article. On February 24, 2020, he was found guilty of rape and sexual assault, after five days of deliberation. On March 11, 2020, convicted of rape and sexual assault on two women, he is sentenced to 23 years in prison. On April 5, 2021, he appealed this conviction to the Supreme Court of the State of New York, believing that his rights to defense had not been respected.

On the private side, Harvey Weinstein married Eve Chilton in 1987. The couple has three children: Lily (1995), Emma (1998) and Ruth (2002). But their divorce is pronounced in 2004. He then found love again on the arm of Georgina Chapman. The couple got married in December 2007. They have two children: India Pearl, born in August 2010 and Dashiell, born in April 2013. In October 2017, in an official statement, Georgina Chapman announces that she leaves her husband.
