Ghislaine Maxwell was born on 25 December 1961 in Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris. Daughter of the British publisher Robert Maxwell and Elisabeth Meynard, a Franco-British historian, she is the youngest of nine children. She grew up in England, in Headington on the outskirts of Oxford, on the family estate where her father’s publishing house, Pergamon Press, is also based. In 1967, her childhood was marked by family tragedy when one of her brothers, Michael, died after several years in a coma following a car accident.

In the 1980s, the young Oxford graduate became part of London society life and worked for one of her father’s magazines. But on 5 November 1991, Robert Maxwell was found drowned near his yacht off the Canary Islands. After her father’s death, she left London and went into exile in New York. She worked in real estate and her interpersonal skills enabled her to establish fruitful relationships. She soon met the billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who became her companion for a few years.

In 2008, Jeffrey Epstein was indicted for the first time in Florida for sex crimes. He pleads guilty and is sentenced to several months in prison. From then on, Ghislaine Maxwell no longer shows up at his side, but continues her activities and her social lifestyle. In 2012, she created an NGO called The TerraMar Project dedicated to the protection of the oceans.

In 2015, a young woman named Virginia Roberts filed a complaint and accused Ghislaine Maxwell of having recruited her as a masseuse for Jeffrey Epstein in 1999 and of being at the heart of the American billionaire’s sex trafficking. A few months later, Ghislaine Maxwell sells her house in New York and makes no more public appearances. Little by little, she withdraws from all social activities. In July 2019, the NGO The TerraMar Project announces the cessation of its activities.

On August 10, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was found hanging in his cell one month after being arrested for prostitution of minors.

The British newspaper The Mirror dated 5 January 2020 states that Ghislaine Maxwell is reportedly threatened with death and is said to be living in solitary confinement and under high protection.

On 2 July 2020, she was arrested by the FBI in New Hampshire in the United States and charged with trafficking in minors for the benefit of Jeffrey Epstein. On 14 July 2020, at a hearing in Manhattan federal court, she pleaded not guilty. Her trial is scheduled for July 2021.
