Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou of his real name was born on June 25, 1963 in London to a Cypriot restaurateur and a British dancer. As a teenager, with high school friends, he began to take an interest in music and wrote songs that he sang in the subway.

In the early 80’s, with Andrew Ridgeley, he founded a band called Wham! The duo quickly won over a large audience and released several hits including Last Christmas and Wake me up before you go-go in 1984. That same year, George Michael recorded a solo song, Careless Whisper, which was a great success. In 1986, the two acolytes split up, George Michael wanted to evolve towards a musical genre more oriented towards soul and funk.

In 1987, George Michael is propelled to the rank of global star with his first album, Faith, which sold several million copies and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He distils in his songs some provocative lyrics that hit the spot (I want your sex). After a second album with more mixed success, despite the title Praying for Time, he left his record company Sony after two years of legal proceedings between 1992 and 1994. Sony reproached him in particular for not having promoted the album Listen Without Prejudice, Vol.1.

For his third album, Older (1996), the singer made a turning point with an album with jazz and RnB sounds and tried to return to success. But in 1998, George Michael made tabloid headlines when he was arrested for indecent exposure in a public restroom in Beverly Hills. Sentenced to community service, he chose to publicly assume his homosexuality. He makes a reference to his arrest in the video clip of the song Outside. He continues his international career and releases a record of covers in 1999, Songs from the last century, under the leadership of producer Phil Ramone, which is very well received.

In the mid-2000s, he sealed his professional reunion with Sony and released Patience (2004). In 2005, the singer agreed to participate in the making of a documentary on his career, George Michael: My Story, directed by Southan Morris. The singer’s popularity did not wane when he returned to the stage with a long tour, between 2006 and 2008, to celebrate his 25-year career. In 2010, he is caught by his demons and is arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. The singer pleads guilty and serves one month in prison in Suffolk. He returns to the forefront in 2011 with a new tour, Symphonica Tour 2011, accompanied by a symphony orchestra. This tour is interrupted in November 2011 because George Michael suffers from pneumonia, for which he is hospitalized for a month. The live album of the tour, Symphonica, will be released in 2014.

On the private side, George Michael met the Brazilian creator Anselmo Feleppa in the early 90s. Suffering from AIDS, Feleppa died suddenly in 1993. The singer then shares the life of Kenneth (known as Kenny) Goss, whom he met in 1996. But in 2009 the couple separated. The singer announces their break-up two years later during a concert as part of his Symphonica Tour. Some time later, he meets Fadi Fawaz, a famous hairdresser in the fashion world, ten years his junior.

On December 25, 2016, George Michael was found dead by his companion at his home in Goring, Oxfordshire, at the age of 53.
