The son of an engineer and a nutritionist, Elon Musk was born on 28 June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. After his parents’ divorce, he was raised by his father. An avid reader, the teenager is interested in all subjects from philosophy to science fiction and video game programming. At the age of 17, he obtains Canadian nationality (his mother’s country of origin), and decides to continue his university studies in Canada. In 1992, he began a physics course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, then joined Stanford University in Silicon Valley to pursue his doctorate in energy physics.

In the mid-1990s, the student decided to interrupt his brilliant studies to take up another challenge, to embark on the Internet adventure. With his brother, he co-founded the company Zip2, a publisher of business software, which he sold in 1999 for several million dollars. He decided to reinvest the money to create a new company, PayPal, an internet payment system. The flourishing success of the company allows him to make a fortune and to resell the company for more than a billion dollars in 2002.

A savvy entrepreneur with an appetite for discovery, Elon Musk then took an interest in space and founded Space Exploration Technologies (Space X). In 2008, he signed a contract with NASA and produced space launchers to supply the International Space Station. At the same time, he multiplied company creations with Tesla Motors (electric vehicles) and more recently Neuralink (artificial intelligence). His many successes earned him the title of Businessman of the Year in 2013. The same year, Elon Musk founded the OpenAI association dedicated to artificial intelligence research based in San Francisco. In April 2017, his fortune is estimated at 15 billion dollars by Forbes.

On the private side, Elon Musk is the father of six children from his marriage to writer Justine Musk Wilson (2000-2008). In 2002, his eldest son died a few weeks after his birth. In 2004, the couple gave birth to twins, Griffin and Xavier. In 2006, the family expanded with the birth of triplets; Damian, Saxon and Kai. In 2010, he married British actress Talulah Riley for a second time, but they were divorced two years later. In 2013, the couple sealed their reunion and remarried. But in 2016 the separation is final and in October 2016 their divorce is pronounced. In April 2017, actress Amber Heard and Elon Musk made their romance official on social networks, but the romance was short-lived and in July of the same year they separated. In early January 2020, his girlfriend, singer Grimes, announced on Instagram that the couple was expecting a child. On 4 May 2020, Elon Musk announced the birth of their son, X Æ A-12 Musk, on his Twitter account.
