Born on February 16, 1989 in Sherman Oaks, California, the youngest daughter of David Olsen, broker, and Jarnette Olsen, professional dancer, Elizabeth is the sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (born in 1986). The siblings also include a boy, the eldest of the family, James, born in 1984. Elizabeth grew up in the shadow of her sisters, stars of the series La Fête à la maison from the age of 9 months. Away from the movie sets, she continued her schooling and excelled in mathematics. But as a teenager, Lizzie, caught up by the family’s artistic fibre, takes part in a musical written by her best friend Clayton Hawkins, a singer and musician. Attracted by this experience, she takes acting lessons in prestigious schools; the Atlantic Theater Company and then the Tisch School of the Arts in New York with a stop in Moscow to follow the Stanislavski method.

Revealed at the age of 22 in the thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, Sean Durkin’s first film, Elizabeth made a remarkable appearance at the Sundance Film Festival where the film received the Director’s Award in January 2011. A prolific young actress, the rising star began shooting at a frantic pace; in 2012 she starred in the thriller Silent House and then played alongside Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver in Red Lights.
