Dominic West was born in 1969 in Sheffield to a father who owned a plastics company and a housewife mother. Dominic studied at Eton, one of the most renowned public schools in the UK, and at Trinity College Dublin. In 1995 he graduated from the Guildhall school of music and drama.

That same year he was cast in Richard Loncraine’s Richard III alongside Ian McKellen, Annette Bening and Robert Downey Jr. He appeared in minor roles in Spice World (1997) and Star Wars Episode I (1999), before making his name in Chicago (2003) alongside Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. He won two other major supporting roles in The Smile of Mona Lisa (2004) with Julia Roberts and Zack Snyder’s Graphic Peplum 300 (2007). Since then, he has appeared in action films such as Punisher: war zone (2008) and John Carter (2012). In 2015, he will star in the films Testament of youth with Alicia Vikander (A royal affair) and Genius with Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman.

Between 2002 and 2008, Dominic West played the role of Inspector Jimmy McNulty in the Baltimore drama series The Wire, and even directed an episode of season 5. In 2011, he also played one of the lead roles in the British series The Hour, about the international crisis of 1956 following the nationalization of the Suez Canal by Nasser: for this role he received a nomination for the golden globe for best actor for a miniseries or a TV movie. In 2014, he will again hit the screen in The Affair, in which he plays the lead role, that of a college professor and writer out of inspiration who has an extramarital affair with a waitress: he is again nominated for the golden globe for best actor in a drama series.

On the private side, Dominic West had a daughter, Martha, born in 1998 from his affair with Polly Astor. Following their separation in 2001, he married Catherine Fitzgerald in 2010. Together, they had four children: two boys and two girls.
