Delphine Boël was born on February 22, 1968 in Uccle, Belgium. Born of an adulterous relationship, she is the daughter of Albert II of Belgium, King of the Belgians from 1993 to 2013, and Baroness Sybille de Sélys Longchamps. She is named after Jacques Boël, a Belgian industrialist, legal father of Delphine since Sybille de Sélys Longchamps was still married at the time of Delphine’s birth. Later, the divorce of the couple is pronounced.

In 1976, Delphine and her mother leave Belgium to go into exile in London. In the middle of the 80’s, her mother reveals her filiation with Albert of Belgium. The young girl completed her entire schooling in London and continued her studies at the Chelsea School of Arts. She then began a career as a visual artist and returned to live in Belgium. She regularly exhibits her sculptures in contemporary art galleries in Belgium.

In 1999, a Flemish journalist published a biography of Queen Paola of Belgium and revealed the existence of Delphine. In 2013, Delphine Boël starts a legal procedure in order to obtain the official recognition of her filiation with Albert of Belgium. On October 25, 2018, the Court of Appeal of Brussels orders Albert of Belgium to submit to a DNA test.

On January 27, 2020, Albert II of Belgium publicly acknowledges that he is the biological father of Delphine Boël following the results of the DNA test.

On September 10, 2020, a new hearing concerning the application for recognition of paternity took place before the Court of Appeal of Brussels, in order to rule on the name and title of Princess that could be attributed to Delphine Boël. On October 1, 2020, the Court of Appeal of Brussels granted her the title of Princess and the name of Saxe-Coburg, from now on she can call herself Delphine of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Princess of Belgium.

On the private side, Delphine Boël has two children; Joséphine (born in 2003) and Oscar (born in 2008) with Jim O’Hare.
