Charlene Wittstock, wife of Prince Albert II of Monaco, is the Princess Consort of Monaco. She was born on 25 January 1978 in Zimbabwe. Her parents moved to South Africa when she was 12 years old. At a very young age, she developed a passion for swimming and from 1993 onwards, she gave up her studies to train. Charlene Wittstock competed in the 4×100 metre event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She won a gold medal in the 200m backstroke at the Monaco International Swimming Meeting.
In the early 2000s, she met Prince Albert of Monaco. They kept their relationship discreet for many months. Her first official appearance with Prince Albert was at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. After winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, Charlene Wittstock announced that she was ending her sporting career in 2007. The engagement of Prince Albert and Charlène was announced in 2010, their civil wedding was celebrated on 1 July 2011 and their religious wedding on 2 July 2011.
Accessible and sensitive to the cause of the underprivileged, Charlène Wittstock is appreciated by Monegasques. She is involved in numerous charity events and is also interested in the arts and literature. Since 2011, she has been running an association, the Princess Charlene Foundation, which supports the cause of women and children in the world.
On 30 May 2014, an official statement from the Palace announced that Prince Albert and Charlène were expecting a happy event by the end of the year. On 10 December 2014, Charlene gave birth to twins Gabriella Thérèse Marie and Jacques Honoré Rainier. Jacques, although born after his sister, is the hereditary prince.
In the spring of 2021, the princess returns to her native South Africa to participate in a rhino conservation mission. She is recovering from an ENT infection in the KwaZulu-Natal region near Durban. On 1 September 2021, she was admitted to hospital in South Africa as an emergency patient, and by the next day was in a stable condition.
