Catherine Zeta-Jones was born on September 25, 1969 in Swansea, Wales. Daughter of a seamstress and a confectionery industrialist, she grew up in the suburbs of Swansea with her two brothers, David and Lyndon. Passionate about singing and dancing, she landed a role in the musical Annie at the age of 12.
The teenager discovers the theater and decides to go to an art school near London where she studies for three years. At the age of 18, she got a role in the musical 42nd Street played on a London stage. Three years later, in 1990, she took her first steps in the cinema in Les 1001 nuits by Philippe de Broca, where she interpreted Shéhérazade. In 1991, it was thanks to television and the successful British series The Darling Buds of May that the young actress began to make a name for herself. In 1996, while she was shooting Robert Lieberman’s TV movie The Titanic, director Steven Spielberg noticed her acting. The latter suggested that she audition for one of the lead roles in the film The Mask of Zorro which he produced. The film was released in 1998 and was a huge success, which brought him immediate fame.
From then on, Catherine Zeta-Jones went on to shoot Haute Voltige (1999), Hantise (1999), Traffic (2000), High Fidelity (2000), Couple de stars (2001)… In 2002, she was in Chicago, adapted from the eponymous musical by Rob Marshall. The actress excels in this genre and is back to dancing and singing. Her performance earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, the Bafta Awards for Best Supporting Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Supporting Actress. Thus consecrated, the actress will multiply prestigious collaborations; notably with Joel and Ethan Coen (Intolerable Cruelty), Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Twelve), or Scott Hicks (The Taste of Life).
In 2010, the actress makes her return to the Broadway stage in the musical A Little Night Music. She distinguished herself again and won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. The same year, she received the title of Commander of the British Order.
Catherine Zeta-Jones then moved away from the film sets to stay by the side of her husband, actor Michael Douglas, who was diagnosed with throat cancer. Gradually the actor overcame the illness, but Zeta-Jones fell into depression and revealed that she was suffering from bipolar disorder.
After an absence of three years, she makes her comeback in 2012, with three films in the theaters (Rock Forever, Lady Vegas: Memoirs of a Gambler, Love Coach). She seals her reunion with Steven Soderbergh in Side Effects in 2013. In 2017, after an absence of more than twenty years, she returns to the small screen in Ryan Murphy’s Feud series. In 2018, the actress is in the credits of a TV movie Cocaine Godmother by Guillermo Navarro.
On the private side, Catherine Zeta-Jones met Michael Douglas in 1999. After their engagement celebrated in December 1999, they got married on November 18, 2000. The couple has two children: Dylan, born on August 8, 2000 and Carys, born on April 20, 2003.
