Catherine Elise Blanchett was born on 14 May 1969 in Melbourne, Australia. Daughter of Robert Blanchett, an advertising executive from Texas and June, a schoolteacher, she has an older brother, Bob, and a younger sister, Genevieve. She was 10 years old when her father died of a heart attack. As a teenager, Cate studied economics and applied arts at the University of Melbourne. After returning from a trip to Europe, which took her as far as Egypt, where she got involved in extras for a feature film, she enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. A brilliant student, she graduated in 1992 and the following year she won the prize for best hope for David Mamet’s play Oleanna at the Sydney Theatre. The young actress then went on to play roles in the classical repertoire from Shakespeare to Chekhov.

Her diaphanous beauty enabled her to obtain beautiful roles as a tragedian in the theatre, but Cate Blanchett wanted to break into film and broaden her range of acting. She ran the castings and landed the lead role in Oscar and Lucinda alongside Ralph Fiennes in 1997. The success of the film immediately brought her fame and enabled her to obtain the role that would bring her international stature as an actress; that of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Her performance in Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth earned her the Golden Globe for Best Actress and the Bafta for Best Actress in 1999. In 2001, she played the Queen of Elves in Peter Jackson’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings. The three parts of the saga, released between 2001 and 2003, set box office records and made her one of Hollywood’s most coveted actresses.

In 2005, her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Aviator won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The actress has collaborated with prestigious directors: Martin Scorsese (Aviator), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel), Steven Soderbergh (The Good German). In 2007, she took on the challenge of playing the singer Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’ I’m not there with brio. In 2013, Woody Allen chose her for the lead role in Blue Jasmine and the actress won numerous awards; Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG Award and Bafta for best actress! After a lengthy shoot that seals her reunion with Peter Jackson in the new Hobbit trilogy, Cate Blanchett plays a stepmother in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (2015). In May 2015, she is cast in Carol by Todd Haynes selected in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2018, Cate Blanchett is the president of the jury of the 71st Cannes Film Festival, from 8 to 19 May.

In 2013, the actress agrees to become the brand ambassador for Giorgio Armani’s Si perfume.

On the private side, Cate Blanchett has been married to Andrew Upton since December 29th 1997. The couple has three sons; Dashiell (born 2001) Roman (born 2004) and Ignatius (born 2008). In March 2015, the family expanded with the adoption of a granddaughter, Edith Vivian Patricia.
