Carl Philip of Sweden, second child and only son of King Carl Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia, was born on May 13, 1979 in Stockholm. Crown Prince at birth, he was relegated to second place in January 1980, behind his older sister, Victoria of Sweden, due to the abolition of male primogeniture in the order of succession to the throne. Since the birth of his niece Estelle of Sweden in February 2012, Carl Philip is third in the order of succession to the throne.

Following the royal tradition, the young Carl Philip made a passage through the Swedish army. In 2007, he completed his military training with the rank of lieutenant in the navy. A sportsman, the young prince regularly spends his vacations in the south of France and enjoys water sports. A fan of car racing, he travels the international circuits in the grand touring category. He continued his studies and chose the artistic path with design. He graduated from the Forsbergs School of Graphic Design in Sweden and the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States. Passionate about photography, which he studied at the National Geographic Society in Washington, he exhibited his work in February 2008 at the Biennial of Photography and Visual Arts in Liege, Belgium. In January 2012, he also obtained a degree in agriculture and rural management from the University of Alnarp in Sweden. The same year, he founded with a graphic designer friend, Oscar Kylberg, the company Bernadotte & Kylberg AB and launched a line of porcelain dishes.

In his private life, Carl Philip of Sweden has a long romance with Emma Pernald (1999-2009) before meeting the former model Sofia Hellqvist in 2010. Their engagement was celebrated on June 27, 2014 and the couple moved into his residence in the Djurgarden district of Stockholm, inherited from Carl Philip’s godfather, Bertil of Sweden. Their wedding is celebrated on June 13, 2015 in Stockholm. On April 19, 2016, the couple gave birth to a baby boy, Alexander Hubertus Erik Bertil, Duke of Södermanland. The couple is expecting their second child for September 2017. On August 31, 2017, the family expands with the birth of a second boy, Gabriel Carl Walther. On December 11, 2020, the royal palace announced that the couple is expecting their third child. The birth is scheduled for the spring of 2021.
