George Allan O’Dowd was born on June 14, 1961 in the suburbs of London. The teenager grew up while the movement was in full swing in the British capital. His quirky look got him noticed in the nightlife scene and the young man hung out with the founders of the neo-romantic group Spandau Ballet.
In 1981, he took the pseudonym of Boy George and launched his own group, Culture Club. He writes festive songs, with half-ska and half-new wave accents and the title Do You Really Want To Hurt Me meets a huge success. The single Karma Chameleon then takes its turn in the international charts. While he sold more than 30 million records, the singer-songwriter gradually sinks into drugs. He manages to get out of this hell by renewing with a form of spirituality and returns on stage in 1984 with Sold. He then takes for a time the pseudonym of Jesus Loves You before returning to that of Boy George.
The icon of glam rock and the gay world of London continues to tour, but again causes controversy in 2009. Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in prison for molesting a Norwegian escort. Despite his release, a court decision forbids him to participate in the seventh season of the reality show Celebrity Big Brother where he was to appear. In 2010, he is the first part of the tour of Lady Gaga. Since then, his first solo album This Is What I Do was released in the stores, in 2014.
